O’Growney (1863-1899) was an Irish priest and scholar, and although not brought up in an Irish-speaking family or community, devoted himself to the Irish language on entering Maynooth in 1882, becoming professor of Irish there in 1891. In 1893 was one of the founders of the Gaelic League, set up ‘for the purpose of keeping the Irish language spoken in Ireland’, and later became its vice-president until his death from TB.
